Tips

Winterize Windows and Doors

  • The first thing to check is to make sure there are no drafts, caulk can dry out in the summer and crack leaving drafts. Using a candle to check for drafts or air movement is a great way to hunt down drafts around window edges.
  • The next step is to remove any old caulk if necessary. Use caulk softener to loosen caulk up around the edges and remove it carefully to ensure the new caulk can seal properly.
  • The final step is to is to use a caulk gun and make sure to cut the tip off at a 45 degree angle and gently apply it along the edge. Wet your finger and use it to smooth in the caulk. Cualk needs 12 to 15 hours to dry and your windows will be airtight.
  • Don't forget your airconditioners, if you leave them in the windows you should cover them to make sure you do not have any drafts thru them.
  • Doors are needed to get in and out but they let air in and out also. Check the sweeps as well as the weatherstrip around the doors. These are easy to replace by yourself. Don't forget to caulk around the doors as you did for the windows.
